Everything You Need to Know about Double Chin Removal Treatment

Seeking double chin removal treatment? We know it’s hard to keep your chin up – especially when there’s another one holding it down.

Double chins are no cause for concern when it comes to health. However, some might find it unsightly.

The double chin, also known as submental fat, is merely an excess of fat in the submental space (the region underneath the chin). Factors such as weight gain and aging could cause a double chin as well.

Submental fat is usually resistant to exercise and diet. Therefore, in order to effectively get rid of or remove the double chin, it sometimes requires a little extra help.

Here, we break down the most common double chin reduction.treatment.

Non-Surgical Double Chin Reduction Treatment

Cryolipolysis

Cryolipolysis is a non-invasive fat removal treatment where freezing cold temperatures are applied to fat cells in the targeted area. The treatment is painless and without incisions or anesthesia. During the reduction treatment, a vacuum cup applicator is placed on the treatment area.

Under sub-zero temperatures, the targeted fat cells go through cell death and are then eliminated via the body’s natural waste disposal system. CoolSculpting, an FDA Approved Cryolipolysis treatment, offers a wide range of applicators targeting fat removal in different body parts – including the double chin removal treatment.

For double chin reduction treatment, CoolMini, the applicator most commonly used for chin fat reduction, is placed directly below the chin and strapped in place. The excess fat is then sucked into the applicator for the treatment to take place. There is no downtime required for Cryolipolysis treatments and patients are able to return to their daily activities almost immediately post-treatment.

Limitations

• Results take time

As the body will eliminate the damaged fat cells over the course of 90 days, you will continue to see progress week by week, but the final results will only be most evident 3 months post-treatment.

• Possibility of Operator Error

CoolSculpting is a treatment that requires accuracy right from the assessment to the actual procedure. One of the most concerning problems that could happen is when the procedure leaves room for operator error, which means that the person carrying out the procedure may have made a mistake that negatively impacts your results. Detailed body assessments prior to the treatments are crucial in eliminating the chance for error.

During the body assessment, proper tests should be carried out to examine the body fat composition and the patient should also be assessed and confirmed to be physically qualified to undergo the double chin removal treatment. To ensure that the right amount of fat is removed, the practitioner must identify the right applicator for the targeted area and proper markings should be made on the targeted treatment site.

• Rare but adverse side effects

Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia (PAH) is a rare side effect where targeted fat cells increase in size instead of decreasing. The exact mechanism causing the development of paradoxical adipose hyperplasia remains unclear, however, based on a study conducted by the manufacturer of CoolSculpting, Allergan, the risk of PAH is 1 in 4000 cycles or 0.025%.

Laser Lipolysis

Laser lipolysis is another non-invasive fat removal treatment that utilizes laser energy to heat and destroys unwanted fat cells in the treatment site. SculpSure is an FDA Approved non-invasive fat removal treatment that uses laser lipolysis and it requires no incision and no anesthesia.

SculpSure

Also known as Laser lipolysis, it is an ideal option for chin fat reduction treatment as it also addresses the issue of skin laxity and can improve the appearance of loose skin. The treatment is performed using an applicator that will be strapped onto the targeted site, where the laser lipolysis would then take place.

The lasers induce constant and concentrated heat at temperatures between 45°C to 47°C, causing the targeted fat cells to break down. The damaged fat cells are then gradually expelled by the body’s natural waste disposal system. This treatment is also able to penetrate deep into the dermis, promoting collagen production, making it effective in treating loose skin that may be in the targeted site.

Laser lipolysis also requires no downtime and patients are able to resume their daily activities immediately after the treatment.

Limitations:

• Results take time

Much like cryolipolysis, laser lipolysis relies on the body to go through the process of naturally disposing of the fat cells, thus the results are visible progressively instead of immediately after the treatment.

• More effective in treating skin laxity

CoolSculpting, in comparison, is significantly more efficient than SculpSure. However, what CoolSculpting lacks is the ability to address the issue of skin laxity that is often observed in more mature patients. With its ability to stimulate collagen production, treatment is able to increase the firmness and lift the loose skin, tightening it up beautifully.

High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) Double Chin Treatment

HIFU uses ultrasound energy to generate heat in the deeper layer of the skin known as the Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System (SMAS). This treatment has to repair the skin ligaments within the SMAS and helps to tighten the facial structure and improves skin elasticity.

This treatment also stimulates new collagen and elastin proteins to help build the skin’s strength and firmness. HIFU not only tightens the skin but also melts fat. Hence, it is one of the suitable treatments for tightening under the chin and lifting droopy jowls to effectively reduce the appearance of a double chin and boxy broad jawline.

HIFU also requires no downtime and patients are able to return to their daily activities immediately post-treatment.

Limitations:

• Results will take a while

As it takes time before the collagen contracts and remodels, it will require a few months in order to observe significant results.

• Suitable for mild to moderate skin laxity

HIFU is suitable for patients with mild to moderate saggy skin. Patients with severe skin laxity should speak to the doctor to consider the other types of treatments.

• Repeated Treatment

HIFU treatment effects usually last about 12 months. It may be necessary to repeat treatments after this time to maintain the optimal results.

Surgical Double Chin Reduction Treatment

Facial Liposuction

Facial liposuction works to permanently remove extra fat deposits from areas such as the neck, cheeks, as well as jowls.

The procedure can be performed under either general or local anesthesia. The plastic surgeon then inserts a small liposuction cannula, which is a slim tube attached to a vacuum, either beneath the chin or behind the ears to remove the excess fat.

As the fat is directly sucked out, the facial liposuction is able to significantly improve the appearance of the double chin.

Limitations:

• Downtime

As facial liposuction is an invasive procedure, it requires significant downtime for the treatment site to heal and recover. Post-treatment, patients typically are required to wear a supportive chin strap or compression bandage for a week after their double chin removal. This is to hold the skin taut when it heals. Patients would only be ready to return to full activity 2 weeks post-treatment. Additionally, swelling and bruising are also common after the procedure and should resolve in about 10-14 days.

• Cost

The cost of facial liposuction is significantly more than non-invasive treatment options. For procedures that must be performed under general anesthesia, it will cost up.

• Not everyone is a right candidate

While liposuction is effective in removing excess fat, it is not able to improve skin laxity or sagging skin. Younger patients between the ages of 20s to 40s would typically have better skin elasticity for the skin to contract smoothly and evenly after the procedure. Otherwise, loose skin would be left behind in place of the double chin that has been removed.

Neck-lift

Neck lift surgeries work to remove excess skin and fat from the neck area to restore a smoother, firmer, and better-defined appearance to the neck region.

The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation, also known as conscious sedation. A small incision will then be made behind each ear to tighten the neck muscles or the platysmal bands and remove the excess skin.

With the removal of the excess sagging skin, the procedure is able to effectively treat “turkey neck”. Wrinkles and creases are also smoothed out throughout the neck. Vertical neck bands are also less visible as a result of the procedure.

Limitations:

• Downtime

Much like facial liposuction, neck lift surgeries are invasive procedures that require significant downtime to heal and recover. However, the recovery time required after a neck lift will depend on the extent of the surgery. Patients are usually able to return to work or resume their daily activity in about 2 weeks post-surgery. Bruising and swelling are also normal post-surgery and should resolve after the first week. Patients will also expect to feel tight in the neck region for a few weeks to several months post-surgery.

• High cost

Firstly, cost for a neck lift surgery depends on the condition of your skin and neck muscles strength. Secondly, the amount of unwanted fat in the treatment area also affects the cot. Finally, the cost of anesthesia would need to be factored in as well as miscellaneous costs incurred from the provider.

Injectable Lipolysis

Injection lipolysis also known as Mesolipo injections or fat dissolving injections. It is a minimally invasive procedure that reduces localized fat deposits through injections. After local anesthesia, the compounds are injected into the treatment site.

The injectable formula typically comprises a mixture of other chemicals but primarily consisting of deoxycholic acid or phosphatidylcholine. Te formula emulsifies the fat deposits within the tissue. There is little downtime required for injectable lipolysis.

Limitations:

• Banned in many countries, including Singapore

In Singapore, the Ministry of Health ruled in 2015 that such procedures and other similar ones grouped under mesotherapy and carboxytherapy lacked scientific merit and have been disapproved locally.

Additionally, the dosage and protocol of these chemical mixtures are not fixed nor are they regulated. Therefore, they cannot be predicted as to how they will work or what side effects they will have.

With the lack of controlled trials, this method still lacks scientific evidence on its efficacy and safety. Several researchers have also examined the efficacy of mesotherapy in the medical and cosmetic fields.  Following the study, they have confirmed the need for larger systematic studies.
