Cryolipolysis for Reduction of Arm Fat: Safety and Efficacy

Weight gain and obesity are giving rise to a new epidemic. Especially since COVID-19 pandemic. It has uprooted lives and routines. As a result, there has been an increase in stress and a decrease in opportunity for physical activity and proper nutrition.

Conventional methods of fat loss do not work as well on arm fat as they do on other parts of the body. As a result, there is an increased demand for arm fat reduction through fat removal treatments.

Cryolipolysis aka fat freezing, a popular non-invasive fat removal treatment, has been demonstrated to be an effective treatment for arm fat reduction and removal. CoolSculpting, the only fat freezing method approved by the US FDA, uses Cryolipolysis in its non-invasive method of fat reduction.

In Singapore alone, there has been a 300% increase in the demand for Cryolipolysis for general fat reduction2.

How Coolsculpting Works to Break Down Fat?

In addition to inherent causes such as genetics causing fat to pool around the mid-section, there are multiple factors that can contribute to stubborn abdominal fat.

Discovered by Harvard scientists, CoolSculpting is the first of its kind to be approved for use by the FDA in 2012.

Cryolipolysis

Initial preclinical studies observed that fat cells were more susceptible to lower temperatures than surrounding tissues. This knowledge led to the development of Cryolipolysis.

The technique consists of the cooling of subcutaneous fat, to temperatures between -11°C to -13°C in order to cause cell apoptosis (cell death)3.

The cooling is done through vacuum cups that create a suction on the targeted area and draw the tissue into the applicator.

Permanently Destroys Fat Cells

It targets and cools the fat cells to an optimal temperature that is cold enough to kill them. But not cold enough that it causes damage to the skin tissue above.

The elimination of fat then occurs over a 3 month period, as the gradual removal of adipocytes through a clearing process via the body’s natural waste disposal systems.

Evaluating the Efficacy of Cryolipolysis for Arm Fat Reduction

With the increased demand for the procedure for arm fat reduction, numerous studies have been conducted evaluating the efficacy of cryolipolysis for breaking down arm fat.

A 2017 study evaluated the safety and efficacy of a CoolSculpting applicator for the reduction of arm fat4.

In the study, Cryolipolysis treatment of the arms has shown to be effective but requires careful applicator placement and patient monitoring during the procedure to ensure safety.

A clinical review study performed in 2015 also included the clinical trials that resulted in the FDA approval of the procedure5.

The review found an average arm circumference reduction of almost 30 percent in participants.

Adverse Effects

Along with that, the adverse effects notes in the study were found to be minimal with almost no significant changes in the lipid levels in the blood.

Although no procedure has been accepted as the gold standard of non-invasive body contouring as yet, Cryolipolysis treatment is considered to be both safe and efficient with a high patient satisfaction rate6.

The Takeaway

Cryolipolysis techniques such as CoolSculpting have been proven to efficiently target and remove fat in certain areas of the body. Compared to other or more traditional methods of fat removal, cryolipolysis has been considered to be more convenient and cost-effective.

While the demand for fat loss solutions continues to grow, and more and more solutions continue to enter the arena, Cryolipolysis has been shown by science to be one of the most effective approaches out there.
