Don’t Sweat It!

Take a casual look around your gym, and you’re sure to see lots of people working hard, shaping their abs or, looking for gym equipment that they can utilize in hopes of getting rid of their love handles. This pattern is common in men of all ages – in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and even in their 50s. This is because having 6-pack abs and having a lean waist have always been considered as the ultimate fitness goal.

Well-defined abs and taut muscles in the abdominal area do give a man’s confidence a little boost too. Whether you’re relaxing by the sea in your beachwear or dressed for business, the ‘size’ of your torso could very well make or break your appearance. That’s why men of all ages work hard to achieve the perfect lean midsection.

But as we all know, good things rarely come easy.

Well-defined abs and taut muscles, do give a man’s confidence a little boost too. Whether you’re relaxing by the sea in your beachwear, or dressed for business, the ‘size’ of your torso could very well make or break your appearance. That’s why men of all ages work hard to achieve the perfect set of six-pack abs.

But as we all know, good things rarely come easy.

Six-pack Decoded

The term ‘six-pack abs’ is derived from its resemblance to the collection of six beer cans that are tied together.  The washboard shape of the chiseled abdomen is defined by the rectus abdominis muscle. Extending vertically from the pubic bone right up to below the ribs, this major muscle covers the vital organs and helps hold them in place. The rectus abdominis muscle comprises of two parallel sections that sit on the right and left side of the body. Each section is further segregated into three parts that are connected by tissue bands. Together, these six connective tissue bands form the classic 6-pack abs.

The only problem is that the rectus abdominis muscle lies under a layer of fat – the subcutaneous fat located just under the surface of the skin. The effort you must put in to showcase your abs is directly proportional to the amount of fat in the area – which means the more fat you have resting on top of your abdominal muscles, the more effort you need to put in the gym.

Although abs workout sessions help develop them, these muscles remain hidden if the fat layer is not reduced. So apart from abs workout sessions, you’ll need to drastically cut down the fat percentage in your body. Only then will your abs get a chance to surface from below the skin.

Love Handles Decoded

Love handles are formed due to fat accumulation or retention in that particular part of the body. As we all know, fat cells tend to accumulate when your body is taking in more calories than it is burning. When fewer calories are being worked off, the body will begin to store more fat. Due to the body’s natural fat distribution, it tends to sit where fat retention is most pronounced, which results in the development of those dreaded love handles.

Usually, a combination of factors ranging from gender, genetic make-up, age, and lifestyle, are known to influence the development of love handlesMen are known to have more fat deposits in the waist-hip region, making it easy for excess fat to cling on there. Lifestyle habits such as a sedentary lifestyle, a diet rich in sugar, carbohydrates, and fats, coupled with irregular sleep patterns can create conducive situations for love handles to form. Hormonal imbalances, particularly the thyroid functions, also figure among the list of causes of love handles.

You Can’t Flex Fat

Undoubtedly, there’s a lot of hard work and dieting that goes into materializing the perfect midsection with distinct 6-packs and a lean waist. Whether it’s the customized abs workout at the gym or a rigorous love handles targeted workout at home, you’ll need to invest time and effort developing the muscles and losing the fat.

To see results, men will typically have to cut down their average body fat composition from around 26% to somewhere around 13% – not an easy task by any measure. Theoretically speaking, conventional methods of exercise and diet can help you achieve your dream six-pack abs – in around two years.  In a nutshell, you need to redefine your way of life – rigorous workouts, dieting, and staying away from many of your favorite foods. The million-dollar question is, are you ready to wait so long, sacrifice so much, all with no guarantee that one day your abs will surface from below?

It’s natural that most people are not particularly ecstatic at the prospect of endless workout sessions, extremely regulated diet regimens, or surgical options. Fortunately, non-invasive fat reduction methods offer quick, safe, and effective results.

Fast Forward to 6-pack abs and Lose those Love Handles

Thanks to the wonders of modern science, non-invasive fat reduction treatments can eliminate that stubborn fat deposits in the abdomen and the flanks. The technology behind these treatments essentially utilizes energy devices to target and destroy fat cells in the body, and eliminate them using the body’s natural lymphatic system.

In laser lipolysis, heat energy is derived from lasers and destroys the stubborn fat cells. SculpSure is a popular FDA-approved non-invasive fat reduction treatment that uses laser beams to create energy. The device deploys a 1060 nm laser to apply heat to the subcutaneous fat cells in the targeted areas. The temperatures reach between 42°C and 47°C, where the structural integrity of the fat cells begins to deteriorate.

SculpSure (Warm Sculpting)

SculpSure is a body contouring treatment that uses laser thermolysis to target fat cells. It is a non-invasive laser technology that uses heat energy to melt the fat deposits in the body and destroy as much as 25% of treated fat cells in a single treatment.

The device uses a 1060 nm laser to heat the targeted subcutaneous fat cells. Between 42°C and 47°C, the fat cells begin to lose their structural integrity, resulting in fat reduction. The destroyed adipocytes are naturally flushed out of the body through the lymphatic system.

How SculpSure Works?

Target

Targeted laser energy heats fat cells under the skin without affecting the skin’s surface.

Destroy

By inducing high temperatures from 43 to 47 °C, SculpSure is able to damage the structural integrity of the targeted fat cells.

Eliminate

Over the next three months post-treatment, the damaged fat cells are processed and eliminated by the body’s lymphatic system.

Results

Fat cells are permanently removed and will not regenerate. Results can be seen as quickly as six weeks, and optimal result are typically most significant at the 12 week mark.

CoolSculpting (Fat Freezing)

Cryolipolysis is also a considerable option in getting rid of stubborn fat cells. CoolSculpting is another FDA-approved body contouring treatment that uses Cryolipolysis to target stubborn fat cells underneath the skin and eliminate them through the body’s natural lymphatic system.

By subjecting the fat cells to cold temperatures between -12°C and -14°C, the fat cells freeze and die, whereas the adjoining skin tissues, which have a lower freezing temperature, remain completely safe. The dead fat cells are then flushed out of the body by the lymphatic system.

How CoolSculpting Works?

Many of us have stubborn fat despite diet and exercise.

CoolSculpting® technology uses controlled cooling, inducing temperatures from -10 to -13 °C to target the stubborn fat cells without harming the surrounding tissues.

In the weeks to follow, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells.

CoolSculpting procedure results are long-term1, as treated fat cells are gone for good.

Complementary Treatments

Sometimes, complementary treatments have to be used in conjunction with the main fat removal treatments in order to achieve the most desired results.

Whether it is to treat skin laxity after the fat has been removed, or improve lymphatic drainage to accelerate the breakdown of fat post-treatment, complementary treatments will often be advised to observe more significant results for our patients.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Body contouring is not meant to be a weight reduction program for people who are grossly overweight or obese. Body contouring aims to achieve defined body contours by getting rid of the stubborn fat cells that are resistant to conventional solutions like diet control and exercise.

Body contouring is for you, if:

  • You are relatively healthy
  • You can grab at least an inch of fat, from the desired area, between your thumb and index finger;
  • You are not pregnant
  • You have stubborn pockets of fat resistant to healthy diet and regular exercise

To learn more about which type of fat reduction modalities will be suitable for you and if you are a good candidate for this non-surgical fat reduction procedure, schedule an appointment with us today.

The body contouring works equally well for both men and women. The treatment is customisable to cater to every individual’s body shape and needs.

Step 1: Consultation – During the consultation, Dr. Kenneth Thean or Dr. Chiam will first understand your area of concern and your fat reduction goals. Your designated doctor will then explain the science behind the technology, walk through with you on the type of procedure that will be suitable for you, the results you can expect from the treatment and answer any questions that you may have.

Step 2: Body Assessment – Before we begin any treatment, our Master Body Sculptor will first conduct a comprehensive body assessment that consists of an InBody weight and body fat analysis, 2D position baseline photographs, tape circumferential measurements, and caliper readings. Once the assessment is complete, a tailored treatment plan will then be crafted.

Step 3: Treatment – The appropriate applicators will be placed onto the area within the planned framework as marked. During the first few minutes, you will feel slight pressure and an intense cold on your skin. The cold will begin to subside after a few minutes and the area will feel numb. As the technology only focuses on freezing fat cells, the other tissues will not be affected.

Step 4: After treatment – After the treatment has been completed, a non-invasive shockwave therapy that uses low-energy acoustic wave pulsations is applied onto the treated areas to break up the fat cells. This also helps to enhance circulation and stimulates lymphatic drainage, which increases the elimination of destroyed fat cells.

Step 5: Review – The follow-up appointment is later scheduled within a week after the treatment, followed by 30 days, 60 days and, 90 days. Every follow-up session, we will repeat the photograph taking, objective circumferential and caliper measurements of the targeted area, and observing the quality of the skin post-treatment.

For patients who have had a large volume of fat removed, complementary treatments might be advised to treat the loose skin. They will undergo a skin tightening treatment that uses special microwave technology to induce immediate shrinkage of the collagen fibers in the dermis and stimulate collagen production which helps to make the tissues firmer and tighter.

After the treatment has been completed, our Body Sculptor will review the before and after images and the overall fat reduction loss with our patients.

The overall CoolSculpting treatment takes about 35 to 45 minutes* for each applicator to complete. Patients can expect up to 27%* reduction in fat.

A detailed body assessment is critical, as the more accurate the measurements are, we are able to recommend a comprehensive, precise treatment plan based on the patient’s anatomy and deliver the best results for our patients.

The objective of this tool is to provide transparency and valuable insights into our patient’s body transformation as well as assist the patient to keep track of their progress.

Once the fat cells have been treated, they will be excreted from the body permanently. However, maintenance through the implementation of a healthy diet and an active lifestyle is always advised post-treatment.

As every patient is different, it varies from person to person as each of us is different in terms of physical proportions, problem areas, genetic makeup, and dietary habits. A clear picture of treatment requirements will emerge after a personal consultation with Dr. Kenneth Thean and a body assessment complete by our Body Sculptor. Based on the findings of the consultation and body assessment, the treatment plan will be finalized. Schedule an appointment for a personal consultation to discuss the possibilities in this regard.

CoolSculpting is ideal for individuals with “pinchable fats”. SculpSure treatments are ideal for people with skin laxity and stubborn fat that is particularly resistant to diet and exercise. A body assessment is required in order to provide an accurate treatment plan. Some patients may also require two different treatment modalities for the different body areas.

Yes. It is possible to simultaneously undergo SculpSure and CoolSculpting procedures on the same day or in the same week, on different parts of the body.

Yes. The fat cells that are eliminated by CoolSculpting will not come back as they are permanently destroyed. However, it is important to also maintain the results by sticking to a healthy lifestyle.

Everybody is unique, the cost is dependent on variable factors;

  • The number of area(s) you would like to target
  • The size of the targeted area(s)
  • The type of fats
  • The patient’s desired results

A detailed body assessment is required in order to provide a suitable treatment plan and an accurate quote.

Post-treatment, a daily 10-minute gentle massage on the treated area helps accelerate the disposal of the disrupted fat cells from the body. Drink lots of fluids and also exercise moderately.

Since it’s a non-invasive procedure that doesn’t involve surgery or suturing of any kind, you don’t require any anesthetic for this treatment. During the procedure, all you’ll experience are intermittent phases of cold or hot temperatures – the heat of the laser energy, and the cool of the applicator on the skin to protect it and keep you comfortable.

Fat removal is possible through any of these three methods. Liposuction is a surgical treatment that has to be done under anesthesia and sucks out fat with the help of tubes inserted into the targeted fat areas. It is an invasive procedure and the recovery process is significantly long. On the other hand, CoolSculpting and Sculpsure are non-invasive, non-surgical FDA-approved procedures that use extremely low temperatures and high temperatures respectively to target the fat cells, denature them which the body naturally eliminates from the body.
